2016, AppetiteCitation Excerpt :The rapid trajectory of obesity prevalence has been attributed to numerous causes, including the built environment, sedentary lifestyles, excessive screen time, genetics, ubiquitous food marketing, a trend towards greater food consumption outside of the home, and sleep deprivation (Burns, Jackson, Gibbons, & Stoney, 2002; Chahal, Fung, Kuhle, & Veugelers, 2013; Lichtenstein et al., 2006; Maher, Olds, Eisenmann, & Dollman, 2012; Morrill & Chinn, 2004; Zimmerman, 2011). This diverse range of causal factors points to the need for comprehensive programmatic approaches that include micro-, meso-, and macro-level components to cater for the complex aetiology of the condition (Gortmaker et al., 2011; Rutter, 2011). Once established, obesity is difficult to treat, making prevention the preferred approach.
